The First Haitian Boat People, around 800 of them participated in the battle of Savannah, Georgia! In an article written by Earl Caldwell in the November 27th 1991 issue of the Daily News he stated: "There is another piece in the Haitian history that hasn't been told. This goes back more than 200 years, back to a time when a strong and independent America was more a dream than a reality. In 1779, America was fighting a revolutionary war. This particular battle was known as "The Siege of Savannah". Little gets said about the battle in Georgia, because instead of victory, it turned out to be a defeat for the French and American forces, so one-sided, it bordered on disaster. And History says the troops were nearly annihilated, had it not been for the black troops from Saint-Domingue, which was then Haiti's name as a French colony. When the battle was over, instead of "The Siege of Savannah" it became known as "The Day Haiti Saved the Retracting Patriot Army." This, my fellow Haitians, is how the first Haitians "Boat People" came to this great country known by the name of America. They were not here to escape slavery, because they got their independence not long after. Instead, they were here to help this great nation's dream become reality. After them, a lot of other Haitians have left their beloved land in search of a better life, just like the Europeans, Asians, etc...A lot of them also came by boat, then again, so were the Pilgrims and others alike who called themselves "Real Americans". Maybe Haitians are poor and mostly illiterate, but we also have an heritage, a history to make even the most powerful nation envious. Although listening to others, you'd never know it. HAVANA, Cuba .- Cuba is optimistic it could soon see a breakthrough in exploiting major oil reserves, officials said this week, a potential shift that could make the cash-strapped communist regime a flush energy exporter.

"We are sure. We are convinced" that major oil reserves lie in the Gulf of Mexico just north of the island, Basic Industry Minister Yadira Garcia told reporters at the Geosciences Conference 2007 in Havana. Cuban authorities are betting big that black gold from its waters could once and for all could eliminate the perpetual Achilles' heel of the local economy: energy.
Cuba's power plants run mainly on imported oil. If the country's planned economy is short on oil or gasoline (petrol), power shortages ensue, food doesn't make it to market, and long lines of commuters snake from bus stops.
At the moment, the Americas' only one-party communist regime gets cut-rate oil from Venezuela. But depending on the relationship with Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez also makes the Cuban economy vulnerable. With many international investors and experts eager to get a piece of this untouched pie, Manuel Marrero, oil sector advisor in the Basic Industry ministry, cautioned: "a substantial increase (in output) only will be possible in the Cuban sector in the Gulf of Mexico, and will take enormous efforts, huge investment and perseverance."
Yet "2008 is going to be very promising insofar as undersea seismic studies and drilling in areas of our economic zone," Garcia said. Next year, she added, "the drilling phase in the blocs we are working with Repsol" will start. The Spanish multinational is just one of the firms elbowing in, along with Norsk Hydro, Canada's Sherrit, Malaysia's Petronas and India's Videsh.
Cuba has divided its exclusive zone into 59 blocs for exploration and production, 16 of which are contracted out. Repsol has six, Sherrit and Petronas have four each, while Videsh has two. Eight more are under negotiation -- four with Venezuela's state-owned PDVSA and another four with an Asian country which Cuba has not disclosed. The other 35 are still up for grabs.
Repsol in 2005 was the first to break ground in the area, but the company determined the crude it discovered was not commercially exploitable at that time. Repsol brought in partners in Videsh and Norsk Hydro to share the risk and to benefit from Norsk's technology, in order to keep exploring in its six blocs. While US lawmakers opposed to Cuba's communist regime have warned drilling in waters between Cuba and US shores could present potential environmental concerns, some US multinationals are irked that the US economic embargo is keeping them from getting in on this potential gold rush.
US companies "have been coming, talking, checking things out ... but we are not the ones limiting them. It is the US government," Garcia said. She said Cuba would work with US oil companies "just as we do with other countries, so long as laws are respected, negotiating rules are respected, we have no reservations." In 2006 Cuba produced about 3.9 million tonnes of oil, seven times more than 1990 when the former East bloc collapsed, depriving Cuba of its long-accustomed supply of cut-rate Soviet crude. Marrero said that with new wells found north of Havana and development of existing functioning reserves, output could hit five million tonnes by 2010 -- for now still well below Cuba's consumption estimated at about nine million tonnes two years ago.
Cubapetroleo, known as Cupet, also says that Cuba has 43 exploration blocs mapped out inside close territorial waters and on land (15 offshore and 28 on land). Among companies involved in production in them are Sherrit, Peberco, also from Canada; and Chinese giant Sinopec. Five are under negotiation and 33 open.

Cuban Americans bristle at the suggestion that they’re incapable of civilized debate. Of course, most of us are peace-loving, if not docile. But it’s impossible to ignore the violence that has marred our history in Miami.
Thirty-one years ago, Emilio Milián, a radio commentator who condemned violence in the service of politics, had his legs blown off by a car bomb. The terrorism continue through the ‘70s and into the ‘80s – Remember the bombs at Replica Magazine?
Miami Cubans did not invent covert violence, it was long a feature of Cuban political life on the island. Buthe flashes of terror chilled the debate for decades.
In the last few years, though, something extraordinary has happened. The extreme intransigence still controls key Spanish-language radio programs. But little by little, the rhetoric has loosened and gentler voices are being heard.
In December, a coalition of exile groups, called for an end to the travel ban (Miami to Cuba)…Even during the the bad old years, academics could travel to Cuba. Folks could visit family. We used to be able to blame Fidel for separating us. The misguided new rules on travel have changed that. Now it’s the U.S. that has redefined family to exclude aunts and uncles, who has kept daughters and mothers separated for three years at a time.
There will be a Saturday debate, 31 March 2007, 10 a.m. to noon at the Tower Theater, 1508 SW 8th Street, Miami Florida.
None of the brains behind the current ban will be at the debate, though organizers invited U.S. congresspersons Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

Je me suis retrouvé, en cours de périple, chez notre ami commun Victor Frérot Léon, un réel progressiste. Frérot m'a comblé en me communiquant (par la méthode moderne ou civilisée l'internet évidemment!) - les notes combien élogieuses que tu confias a la machine...vagabonde.
Que de souvenirs! Les malheurs de l'exil n'ont pas pu abolir un passé que nous ne regrettons pas. Certes, il a fallu l'exil pour vraiment comprendre et connaître le frère, l'haïtien. Nous consolent cependant les rencontres et la compagnie de citoyens sérieux, honnêtes et valables, contraints à se retirer du pays, et emportés par le destin.
Il y aurait tant à dire, à conter à cette génération. Avec Raoul et toi, on a pu se brasser un peu les souvenirs....Mais le temps, le temps rongeur !!!...

Cette semaine a été téleversée, dans le classeur des Impressions et Faits Cliniques et le sous-classeur de quelques QUESTIONS qui m'ont été adressées, une page sur le prurit.
Le prurit est un symptôme qui recouvre une sensation de démangeaison de la peau, le plus souvent en rapport avec des lésions dermatologiques mais parfois aussi sans cause apparente (c'est le prurit sine materia). Le prurit lorsqu'il est généralisé et chronique prend le nom de prurigo et est, souvent, accompagné de papules dermatologiques. Les causes du prurit sont multiples et il est moins utile de les énumérer toutes, comme il serait inutile d'énumérer les
diverses cause de la douleur, que de trouver la méthode pour arriver à un diagnosti différentiel, i.e., au diagnostic de la cause probable du prurit.
Parce que le prurit peut être également le signe d'une maladie grave, comme le cancer ou la cirrhose, il ne doit pas être négligé comme signe clinique et le médecin doit lui prêter une attention, tout comme il le fait pour les autres signes. "La Page Médicale est drôlement sérieuse."

LA CONSTITUTION ET LA NATURE SOCIO-ÉTATIQUE D’Haïti.

Un aspect malheureusement négligé de la constitution haïtienne est sans doute, le rôle voire la mission de l'État et des secteurs de communication sociale, dans l'amélioration de la culture et l'élévation du niveau culturel des haïtiens. Cela ne doit pas être qu'une affaire d'écoles et d’universités, lesquelles souvent reprennent dans leur fonction de reproduction du schéma social en vogue, les mêmes tares de notre société malade et doivent être réformées, mais aussi, un engagement à édifier un nouveau type d'homme et de citoyen, capable de faire un pays et de constituer une nation véritable. Et cela, il faut que les citoyens appelés à la réflexion sur la constitution de 1987 et à un travail de consultation en vue d'un éventuel d'amendement de ladite charte mère, pensent à inclure comme suggestion fondamentale pour une prochaine constitution, la création des maisons de la culture où sont préposés des moniteurs chargés de transmettre les nouvelles valeurs susceptibles de changer, de purifier la weltanschauung collective haïtienne et d’ériger le nouveau pays, loin de l'Haïti égrugée d'aujourd'hui par les incohérences mentales et comportementales de la société qui l'ont amenée où elle est. À cet effet, l’État se doit d’investir dans l’éducation de masse par une véritable batterie d’émissions financées et tenues dans la presse parlée et écrite et dans le multimédia - vu la facilité de leur accès et l’efficacité de l’oralité et de l’audiovisuel à façonner les comportements collectifs - pour véritablement et valablement penser la nouvelle humanité et citoyenneté haïtienne. Il est donc question pour le ministère de la culture de rompre avec l’ostentation fallacieuse, la sinécure et la politique politicienne pour devenir, alors que croule l’ancien, le fer de lance du Nouveau sans cesse différé en Haïti par une mentalité sociale et étatique vétuste, médiocre et déshumanisante. Si la constitution définit la nature de l’État c'est-à-dire son essence républicaine, monarchique ou autre, nous devons l’armer cette fois pour qu’elle permette à la culture de rebâtir l’esprit et la nature de la société, en créant pour de vrai, l’Homme haïtien et le Citoyen haïtien qui, jusque là, comme un oiseau coincé dans son œuf, n’arrivent guère en deux cents ans de gestation, à briser leur coquille pour naître et activement contempler le ciel et emplir la terre de leur effectivité! Ici, gare à la confusion de la culture du changement avec le folklore et le culte, car ceux-ci sont parts du mal qui aliène l’action haïtienne depuis deux siècles. Ni la vaudou, ni le catholicisme ni les cultes réformés, ni l’islam ne peuvent rien dans leur empan hiératique pour la libération. La libération sociale est et doit être laïque et disposer de toutes les énergies sans évoquer le religieux ou le cultuel de ses intervenants. Laïcité éthique qui moralise la société en redynamisant la culture comme grand moule des mentalités collectives pur un nouvel espace public, un nouveau vivre ensemble libéré des projections malsaines d’un État moloch et d’une société de clivages grossiers et ridiculement ostracistes. Car la culture de masse, lorsqu’elle échappe au populisme par quoi des profiteurs utilisent crapuleusement le peuple, est la matrice du nouveau, la parturiente de l’émancipation. Qu’une constitution nouvelle soucieuse d’enfanter le Nouveau, pourvoie à la dynamisation d’une autre mentalité par l’action culturelle pour une autre société plus digne et enfin humaine! FIDEL CASTRO.- À part cela, il y avait ce que l’on appellait les sergents politiques. Qui étaient ces sergents politiques ? Ils étaient des spécialistes en la matière. Je ne vais pas te dire qu’ils étaient versés en sociologie, en droit ou en économie, sinon des paysans « qui savaient éteindre les bougies » et trouvaient un emploi déterminé dans le gouvernement, ou quand commencait la campagne électorale on leur donnait une somme d’argent pour voter pour un magistrat de la ville, de l’argent pour voter pour le gouverneur de la province, de l’argent pour voter pour un député, de l’argent pour voter pour un sénateur, et aussi de l’argent pour voter pour un président. À cette époque, il n’y avait pas de campagnes électorales par radio ou télévision qui je crois aujourd’hui sont encore plus coûteuses.
FREI BETTO.- C’est ainsi que cela se fait jusqu'à présent au Brésil.
FIDEL CASTRO.- Je me souviens que c’était ainsi à l’époque des élections. Je te parle quand j’avais 10 ans, j’étais déjà versé en politique à l’âge de 10 ans car j’avais vu tant de choses ! Je me souviens aussi quand j’allais en vacances hors de chez moi, car depuis l’âge de 5 ans on m’envoyait ailleurs, et les vacances coincidaient avec une campagne politique, le coffre d’argent qui était dans la chambre ou je dormais devenait un problème. Tu sais que les jeunes garcons aiment dormir tard le matin, mais je ne pouvais le faire car depuis 5 heures 30 au coq chantant en période électorale, il y avait du mouvement, on ouvrait et fermait le coffre constamment avec son inévitable bruit métallique , parceque les sergents arrivaient et il fallait leur donner de l’argent comptant. Tout ceci, laisse-moi te dire, de la facon la plus altruiste au monde, car mon père le faisait par simple amitié pour cett personne. À part les prêts que cet ami faisait à mon père je ne me souviens d’aucun autre service qu’il lui a rendu. Et c’est ainsi que se faisait la politque, celle que j’ai vécue quand j’étais gosse ; vraiment, c’était ainsi.

Maestra... de tizas y pizarrones y de libros de literatura del uno mas uno es dos y de limpiar narices frías. De vocación, de renuncios y de curar llantos perdidos. De viajar por senderos estrechos y de cruzar las nevadas montañas para llevar el ABC a sus adoradas criaturas. De ayudar al joven descarriado y de hacer de la palabra un libro abierto a tantas preguntas irresueltas.
