99 years young

by Oscar Niemeyer

Like every Brazilian family I have some Negro and Indian blood. That’s what characterizes my racial heritage and I am proud of it.
What is important is Life, Friends and attempting to make this unjust world a better place in which to live.
Multi-millionaire and famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was born on December 15, 1907,  in the hillside district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has lived and worked in that area ever since, with occasional forays to France and Italy.
As a student working in the office of Lucio Costa, a prominent architect, he was assigned to work on the plans of the Ministry of Public Instruction designed by the famous French architect Le Corbusier.
It was while working on this project that he met the mayor of Brazil's wealthiest central state, Juscelino Kubitschek, who would later become President of Brazil. As President, Kubitschek appointed Niemeyer to be the chief architect of the city of Brasilia, a project which occupied all of his time for many years
In 1947, his world-wide recognition was confirmed when Niemeyer traveled to the United States to design the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
Today, Niemeyer is 99 and still involved in diverse projects, mainly sculptures and readjustments of old works of his that, protected by national (and some cases international) historic heritage regulations, can only be modified by him. He is currently designing a statue showing a tiger with its mouth open and a man fighting it raising the Cuban flag against the US blockade of Cuba.

Fidel Castro

opened the doors to the

NEW MAN

The famed architect Oscar Niemeyer criticized the plan of George W. Bush with the U.S. government to destroy the Cuban revolution and take over the Caribbean country. He declared that the U.S. will not accept Cuba’s nor Fidel Castro’s independance and is enforcing an economic embargo against the island for the past 47 years. But these measures by Bush will not prevent the Cuban revolution to continue, and will not keep Fidel from sleeping.

In reference to the actual disastrous world situation charaterized by US and Israeli agressions against Afganistan, Iraq and Lebanon, Niemeyer said that by nature US imperialism will always be barbarian.  He added that this can be observed in Palestine and the Middle East.  Facing the alliance of the US and Israel, the world can not stay indifferent.

Niemeyer stated that Latin America is going through a very special moment in its history. “ I have faith that new leaders will emerge and social conditions will improve, but not enough as should be expected” he added.
Relating to his country Brazil, Niemeyer is convinced that president Lula Da Silva is the best option. Niemeyer is also concerned like everyone with violence, crime, and impunity. However, one must meditate on the roots of the problem.  “As long as inequalities, social degradation and hunger exist, there will be violence” he added.
In his biography, Oscar Niemeyer reveals how his philosophy and his many passions - his large family, many friends, the sensuous land and blue sky of Brazil, women, communism, art and literature - have formed the heart of his life and are the key to his architecture.
In being asked who is his favorite public figure. His answer: “ Fidel Castro.  Fidel did something fantastic.  He opened doors to the NEW MAN.”
