GEORGES SAMI SAATI RECOVERING FROM HIS HEART OPERATION

To all Georges’ friends.

He is doing very well and wiil be kicking for quite a long time.  My friend Georges came through a very serious operation, and he did very well. He will be in better shape than he ever was before.

We will be glad when Georges is back to his old self in our midst.  Future plans are on track and looking better than ever.  So we are back with the good times in the old town again.  Do not thread on us.

Georges is planning on making a party which he claims will be the party of the year.  He intends to invite all the doctors who participated in his recovery.  Heading the list will be Dr. Mercedes Dullum, originally from Jamaica, who was declared the cardiac surgeon of the Year in Florida, in 1985. Georges claims to be lucky with the so-called “weaker-sex.” He wants me to be his guest of honor, but in all fairness, let’s make Dr. Mercedes Dullum the honoree of that evening.  All the doctors will eventually be interviewed on “Carl’s Corner” and “Frankly Fombrun.”

All the best, mon frère Georges,

Carl

Received from Myriam Nader

Good Morning Don Carlito!

Thank you for coming last Friday night January 27 at the fund raising for Charles-Henri Baker running for president of Haiti! Your support means a lot to us. I am e-mailing your picture with your friends Georges Saati and Gérard Léger, during my last exhibit for Philippe Dodard at the gallery in December 2005.

I wish Georges Saati a very good convalescence!

Also, please find a picture of Charles-Henri Baker Junior and me, during the raffle for Charlito's campaign at the gallery last night.

Have a great week-end!

REGARDING DR. SERGE SABALAT

Dear Mr. Fombrun,

At the moment I  forwarded my e-mail I did not realize that it  would end up in a public forum and I nearly choked... My e-mail was intended for your eyes only. Stupid, STUPID mistake and I do beg you (and all the parties involved!) pardon.

I sincerely apologize and appreciate your answer.

Best of wishes,

MY ANSWER

Dear Ami,

To err is human. Let’s move on. Dr. Serge Sabalat is a decent human being and , him and I,  we have a blood relationship.  Whatever misunderstanding will be clarified and the truth shall make us free.

I reiterate to all those who want to send me a private message to use carl@fombrun.com  By sending to “Comments to Carl” at mail@fombrun.com

it’s a public forum over which I initially have no control, and that I only can delete after the fact.

Subject: Sabalat family

Dear Carl,

I’m writing this inquiry on behalf
of my godson Julius, whom I love
dearly. He or his mother know
nothing of my efforts to get
information on Julius´ father. This
is to avoid any disappointment on
their behalf.

Julius is a loveliest boy at the age
of 8… at the age and stage when
roots and knowing where one is
coming from are becoming more
meaningful and important. Every now
and then Julius asks about his
father whom his mother met in Italy.
Father’s name is Serge Sabalat and
what I have understood of your
columns you know the Sabalat family
quite closely.

If you could send me an e-mail where
you could tell me if Julius´ father
is well and maybe his whereabouts,
if he has family and also some
information of Julius´ aunt Jocelyn
and her children (Julius´ cousins),
if she has any.

All this, of course, on a permission
of Mr. Sabalat for my wish is not to
create any turmoil or friction in
his life or relationships but only
to answer some unanswered questions
of an eight year old.

More than thankful for your answer
in advance.
Julius´ godmother,
Ami Niemelä

RECEIVED FROM DOUGLAS MAYFIELD

Chomsky: 'There Is No War On Terror'

By Geov Parrish

The acclaimed critic of U.S. foreign policy analyzes Bush's current political troubles, the war on Iraq, and what's really behind the global 'war on terror.'

My hat certainly goes off to you, Carl for distributing this interview.  I've been reading Chomsky since U.S. plans to invade Iraq were announced.  He has enormous breadth of understanding coupled with a singular focus on the most urgent issues facing the human species today.  And he is the most honest commentator I know.

Your friend and neighbor,

Douglas Mayfield

Thank you, Doug.  It was certainly a pleasure as always to hear from you.

All the best, Carl

WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR FOR A MONDAY MORNING

WE NEED MORE GRANDMOTHERS IN COURT!!!

Why Lawyers should never ask a witness a question if they aren't prepared for the answer:

In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand ... a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The Lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women, one of them was your wife. Yes, I know him."

The defense attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench, and in a very quiet voice, said: "If either of you bastards asks her if she knows me, I'll throw your sorry asses in jail for contempt."

Internet advances Caribbean tourism

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: The Internet has become such a powerful tool that it now enables small Caribbean countries like the Cayman Islands, to act as its own travel agent rather than rely on foreign countries to drive tourists to their destinations.

Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace,
Secretary General, Caribbean
Tourism Organisation

Furthermore, the Internet and digital technology can upscale the travel experience, increasing the likelihood that tourists will recommend that destination to their family and friends, according to the Secretary of General Caribbean Tourism Organisation, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who spoke at the Cayman Business Outlook conference in Grand Cayman last week.

“The cost of communication to call foreign countries used to be so high that very few phone calls were made,” said Mr Vanderpool-Wallace.

“Now, you can connect a telephone to your laptop anywhere in the world at rates that are unbelievable.

“There is no reason why travel agents here can’t be booking tourist packages in the US or in Europe. Besides, who knows more about the Caribbean then people who live in the Caribbean?”

He said a survey for a Caribbean website showed that tourists like to chat online with other people who are going to the same destination at approximately the same dates. The survey showed that forming a connection with other people during their vacation increased the value of their experience.

He added the data from Immigration cards that tourists fill out at the point of entry could be used as a database to provide a higher level of service and goodwill and improve the chances the tourist will return or recommend the destination.

“No matter how good the destination may be many people will not come back next year. But one number that needs to grow is the number of people they recommend your services and products for your jurisdiction,” said Mr Vanderpool-Wallace.

He added that collecting this information should impact marketing the destination. For example, the date of birth could be used to send an email birthday greeting by the Minister of Tourism or representative from the Department of Tourism.

Additionally, information used to book the air and hotel package can be used to provide beverage or food preferences. And there is no reason why a taxi cannot be booked online to not only take the tourists to their hotel when they arrive by the airport, but also serve as the same taxi driver throughout their vacation.

Booking through the Internet for all the services and products needed to enjoy their holiday will become more of a seamless experience from taking a taxi to the hotel, tours and souvenirs.

Mr Vanderpool-Wallace said selling products like rum cakes and other Caribbean products on the Internet should also be considered. He said those members of the industry and the countries that are not doing this are not taking advantage of the ways to increase the bottom line and level of service.

“The Financial Times reported that rich people find more happiness from travel experiences like scuba diving then they do from buying a new Ferrari,” said Mr Vanderpool-Wallace.

He added that vacations and travel experiences fill a void that no other product or service can provide and the Caribbean is well positioned to provide that experience.

INTRODUCTION OF MASTER MOTIVATOR

EDOUARD F. LAFONTANT

 BY

CARL FOMBRUN

AT BOOKS & BOOKS IN CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA

To introduce my childhood schoolmate Edouard Lafontant, I found this poem of Janice James appropriate, which I just read in the  French language:

I have travelled the world twice over,

Met the famous saints and sinners

Poets and artists, kings and queens,

Old stars and hopeful beginners.

I have been where no-one has been before,

Learned secrets from writers and cooks

All with one library ticket

To the wonderful world of “ Books and Books.”

365 plus 1 postive thoughts to reinvent yourself is the latest book that Edouard Lafontant, as a Master Motivator, had the genuine idea to put togother in three languages English, French, and Spanish.

I first met Edouard Lafontant  60 years ago when we were teenagers in school in Haiti, only to meet him again recently where I had the pleasure to interview him on “Carl’s Corner” on ISLAND TV and “Frankly Fombrun” on Haitian Television Network in Miami.

To quote Paul J. Meyer, Founder of Succes Motivation International in Puerto Rico, where Edouard Lafontant is a Vice-President, Edouard’s latest book is compiled in three languages, no less, in a format that can encourage and inspire readers around the world.” End of quote.

Edouard Lafontant is a positive thinker and a Master Motivator.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

Motivating people to their fullest potential is the motto of Success Motivation International Institute; it is also the main purpose that Edouard Lafontant has in his life.

Edouard Lafontant studied accounting and business management at La Salle University and Marketing at the University of Puerto Rico.

He started his career back in 1950 with the American government foreign aid service in Haiti, until he moved to Puerto Rico where he worked with several corporations in accounting and administrative positions, one of them the well known Haitian firm of Behrmann Motors Inc.

In 1970, Edouard Lafontant joined Success  Motivation International as a sales representative.  Soon he became Division Manager then vice-president.  When the opportunity arose, he acquired the franchise rights to market the programs and services of Success Motivation International in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

As a salesman he won every plaque and trophy available in Success Motivation International.  In 1973 he was awarded “Distributor of the Year” award and in 1979 “General Director of the Year” award.  In 2000 he won the “Master Licensee of the Year” award.  His greatest satisfaction is to make his associates win.

Edouard Lafontant has trained and lectured more executives, supervisors and sales people than anyone else in Puerto Rico.  He has also spoken to groups in the U.S., Canada, Central and South America.  He has visited many European countries.  He is the author of  “ Creative Selling – The Key to Success” that circulates the world in various languages. Recently , he published his book “365 plus 1 Positive Thoughts to Reinvent Yourself Every Year.

In 2004 in Puerto Rico he was awarde the “Governor Luis A. Ferré Aguayo a la Excelencia” for his contribution in enhancing the Puertorrican Society.

With a group of Haitians and other Caribbean friends, he founded the “Fundacion Civica Haitiana-Caribeña Inc.”, of which he is the actual president.  In this capacity he received the “Spirit of Caring Leadership Award.”

What makes our guest speaker so special, it’s not his vast knowledge and great experience, but the warmth and sincerity of his expressions.  He is fluent in French, English, Spanish and Creole.  2006 is going to be a better year because of him.

Please join me in welcoming the President of LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS INSTITUTE and General Director of SUCCESS MOTIVATION INTERNATIONAL in the Caribbean, Mr. Edouard Felix Lafontant.

Heart Attack Kills Salvador Leftist Leader

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Shafik Handal, leader of the Salvadoran left and an ex-guerrilla commander who fought United States-backed troops during the 12-year civil war, died Tuesday 24th January 2006 of a heart attack, doctors and his political party said. He was 75.

Mr. Handal lost consciousness in the airport of this capital after attending the inauguration on Sunday of President Evo Morales of Bolivia. He was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Resuscitation efforts failed, Dr. Ramón Colato said at a news conference. Mr. Handal was head of the Salvadoran Communist Party before it merged with four other leftist groups into the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front in 1980.

Backed by Cuba and the Soviet Union, the front waged a powerful insurgency against various conservative military and military-influenced administrations that were supported by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

Mr. Handal led the Communist faction of the coalition before it became a legal party in 1992. The son of immigrant Palestinian parents, he became a leader of the Salvadoran Communist Party in 1972.

(suite dans la partie anglaise du CDC)

...estoy para ti...

No des tantas vueltas al destino
no te confundas en la tristeza
piensa en mi amor, estoy contigo
deseo consolarte, lo digo con firmeza

Aunque tengas penas en tu alma
si te han herido u olvidado
déjame brindarte la calma
cuenta conmigo, puedo estar a tu lado

Cuando la fría soledad sientas en ti
si tu cuerpo tiembla con loco frenesí
!Búscame, mírame, me tienes a mí!
!Tócame, tómame, aquí estoy para ti!

PAWOL  LA POU JODI’A :

DU TUYAU IN ENGLISH AND CREOLE

From: viandemoulue@aol.com

Dear friends, I translate for you from Kreyól in my not-too-good little English. My uncle, Mèt Pistach (Master Peanut) just send this poem beautiful to me. Here we go, with translation on same line little bit for each phrase he he he...

- De je kontre, manti kaba (when each two eyes of two people meet, you see the love, or the hate)

- Eleksyon se pi gwo zam malere (voting is the poor's last and only effective weaponry)

- Nou te di powblèm lan se Titid, kounouye a, nou voye touye Preval (I thought Titid was Mister-Problem-for Haiti; why now you want to kill Preval in Ouanaminthe campaign, when Preval is no even Lavalas candidate? What is this new group that want to kill Preval by the way  Base 52?)

- Depi Makandal, pèp Ayisien te di, fók peyi dAyiti  gen pèsonality (Since Makandal used to chop heads before we are Haiti, the majority Haitian people say, we are one people with a personality; that's why when the blan and the black and all everybody foreign go to Haiti, they fall in love or in hate with the country)

- Ankó m ap fout di l, de je kontre, manti kaba (I'll see you on February 7, 2006)

- Sispann fè lach (don't hide behind crimes to keep me from going to the polls)

- Kanaval sa-a, l ap koumanse 7 Fevriye (it's after elections I'm gonna start the carnival music and songs  nice rara songs too hehehe)

- Mwen pa rayi-w ti bway, mwen jis di w respecte la lwa (I don't hate you brother and sister, all am asking, is for you to respect law and order, to respect due process oh oh oh .... and also too, to stop thieving and then, call me the thief)

- Ou di pwoblèm lan sete Titid, kounouye a li ale, pou ki sa-w pè pou m pa al vote Site Solèy (You say to me, Aristide was problem; was he really THE PROBLEM, when you keep on calling me "chimè" because I am poor?)

- Se wou ki te vomi, oubyen wap ranmase l, oubyen wap vale l  (I didn't vomit a monster that keeps everyone out of my country; you say you want to create job for us but when you got the bid for electoral cards, instead of giving the contract to a Haitian firm [despite the fact that you no nothing about the printing business], you gave the countract back to those who hate us, in the DR and to a Dominican consortium). So where the freak is the job you were going to create after you send Titid to South Africa? Big tchwipe!!! he he he

- Nou kenbe w (Gotcha!!)

- Nou fout san wont, bann vólè, san konsyans, apatrid (crooks can dress well, but they're still crooks)

- Bare vólè ...  (they like to scream help!! a thief is in town .. but watch out, put your wallet in your vest and please, I know you love women and so, don't accept any hug from them women).

Okay ... this poem I email back for forwarding to you, is completely unaltered.

Oh by the way, I don't need no favor from anybody right or left. Not now, and hopefully with God's help not ever. I am just forwarding you my frustration and conscience, for a country and a people of all color and culture and race, that I love so very dearly.

I am immensely frustrated with the morons from the supposed right and left and especially ultra-left, that keep us from moving forward.

If the anti-Titid ultra-right people are laughable, hilarious, and pathetically funny and a pleasure for me to read, these ultra-left guys and gals make it even harder for us to make any progress as a people and nation with their vindictive hate of one freaking person, Aristide. They can't seem to see that there's a much MUCH bigger issue here.

Du Tuyau, tèt cho hot-headed

MÈsi du tuyau.  MEZANMI, se la map rete pou jodi’a.  Na pale demen si Granmèt la vle.
